Brie Larson’s MCU status is unknown after ‘Marvels’ flop

Brie Larson is defiantly mum on her plans to continue in the Marvel Cinematic Universe after her latest movie with Marvel Studios, “The Marvels,” fizzled at the box office.

“Extra” asked Larson at Saturday’s SAG Awards if she had any upcoming MCU projects in the works.

Larson, 34, shook her head.

“I don’t have anything to say about that,” the “Lessons in Chemistry” star replied.

It wouldn’t be surprising if “The Marvels” was Larson’s swan song in the MCU.

The movie, which opened in November as a sequel to Larson’s hit 2019 movie “Captain Marvel,” made only $47 million in the US over its opening weekend — the worst opening for any MCU movie.

By comparison, “Captain Marvel” opened to $153 million in 2019.

In November, after “The Marvels” was released, Larson was enthusiastic about the prospects for her on-screen alter ego, Carol Danvers, of whom she said “there is still so much” in the character to explore.

“I feel like getting to be on this team just cracked her open in a way that she hadn’t been, and I really loved her for that,” she told “Entertainment Tonight” at the time.

And when she was asked about future MCU projects, Larson hedged her bets by hinting at a movie in the pipeline.

“I don’t want Marvel to come for me,” she said. “But there is something. There is definitely something to your question, that I would want to say, but I am not going to.”

Thus far, Marvel Studios has not announced a sequel to “The Marvels,” and “Deadpool & Wolverine” (starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman) will be the only MCU release this year.

Marvel expects to produce six more movies between 2025 and 2027, including the next “Captain America” movie, two “Avengers” films and reboot of “The Fantastic Four.”

Perhaps Larson’s “Marvels” co-star Iman Vellani had the right idea.

When the movie opened, Vellani said the actors should not be concerned about box-office receipts.

“I don’t want to focus on something that’s not even in my control,” she said, per People. “Because what’s the point?”

“That’s for [Disney CEO] Bob Iger.”
