Introduction to the Incident
One of my neighbours ordered something that was delivered by Evri.
Once the delivery was done, the driver went to his car, took some toilet paper, then went under the outside stairs and defecated.
I’ve been trying to log a complaint with Evri, but there’s no way of doing this without a reference number, which I don’t have because it’s not my parcel.
All I want from Evri and the driver is for the mess to disappear from under the stairs.
It stinks, it’s a health hazard and there’s no communal cleaning service that could sort it.
Do you think you can help me with this? A.I, via email
Response from Harvey Dorset
Harvey Dorset, of This is Money, replies: This certainly isn’t an email I receive every day, and I dare say it’s not one you expected to send either.
You even sent me a video of the delivery driver in the act, captured on your doorbell camera, which we have published here.
Parcel couriers have become ubiquitous as more and more of us make use of online deliveries instead of heading out to the local high street.
Of course, with so many deliveries taking place, problems do arise.
More often than not, these relate to lost or damaged parcels, as with cases This is Money has addressed in the past.
It’s not just Evri of course, with other couriers like Yodel, DPD and Royal Mail all facing their fair share of delivery issues.
The drivers are usually self-employed workers who get paid based on how many parcels they deliver.
This means many put in long shifts, so it is perhaps only a matter of time before a driver finds themselves caught short on a job.
Unfortunately though, this isn’t the kind of delivery that you would expect to be waiting for you when you get home from work.
All jokes aside, this is a serious matter and I’m not surprised that you are annoyed.
The Incident
Unexpected delivery: This reader received something they were not expecting when a parcel was dropped at their neighbour’s house
As you rightly say, somebody defecating outside your home is unsanitary and a potential health hazard.
As well as your property, the driver has soiled Evri’s reputation.
Last year, Ofcom named Evri as the parcel company with the most dissatisfied customers for the second year in a row.
Response from Evri
However, when I contacted Evri on your behalf and am pleased to say that they took the matter very seriously.
An Evri spokesperson told This is Money: ‘We are very sorry about this unacceptable behaviour which is not representative of the vast majority of couriers who deliver for us.
‘We have a zero-tolerance policy and the courier will no longer deliver on our behalf.
‘By way of an apology we have arranged for a professional cleaning service to attend the property.’
I am glad this matter has finally been cleared up – quite literally.
