French Teachers Trained as DELF Assessors
Basseterre: St. Kitts, Wednesday, February 27, 2025
Yesterday, ten secondary school French teachers gathered at the St. Christopher Air and Sea Port Authority Conference Room to participate in a virtual training session on Diploma of French Language (DELF) and Advanced French Studies Diploma (DALF).
Training Objectives
Director of the Curriculum Development Unit (CDU) Mrs. Amanda Edmead highlighted the reasons for the training sessions and revealed that the Federation is on the verge of reintroducing the DELF program to students by September 2025.
“Today marks the start of a three-day training session for selected teachers from St. Kitts and Nevis to be trained as DELF Assessors. DELF is an examination conducted through the Alliance Française through the Republic of France. Once the program begins in the Federation, we will need assessors to help conduct the examinations. The training allows the assessors to conduct the assessment. For the assessment to take place, there will need to be at least two assessors for each centre,” she said.
Importance of DELF
Mrs. Edmead noted that the Federation has recently become a member of the Francophone group and added, “This training provides our teachers with improved skills to assist them in gaining a certain level of certification in the DELF Program. This is one way for us to help to bring more life and more interest in the French Language as there is a decline in the number of students who are pursuing French significantly over the years.”
Acknowledging the importance of DELF to students, Mr. Dwight Berridge, Language Coordinator, CDU, expressed, “The DELF is very important because the competencies that are being tested – reading, speaking, listening, and writing – are internationally recognized. A certification in DELF is very important for our students.”
The three-day training session concludes on Thursday, February 27.
Conclusion
The training session aims to equip teachers with the necessary skills to conduct DELF assessments, which will be essential for the program’s successful implementation in September 2025. The DELF program is expected to bring more life and interest in the French Language, which has seen a decline in popularity among students over the years.
