A Return to Sarajevo
Six years ago, I embarked on a motorcycling journey across several Balkan countries, starting in Turkey and ending in Italy. One of the most fascinating countries I visited was Bosnia Herzegovina, particularly its capital city, Sarajevo. I knew that I would someday return, and I recently did, exactly a month ago.
The Changes I Saw
The changes I noticed during my second visit were both dramatic and subtle. New modern-style buildings, numerous five-star hotels, tree-lined streets, and amazing local handicraft shops were a testament to the city’s progress. Yet, everything blended together seamlessly, with history still very much present. The city was thriving, with hordes of tourists, top-class restaurants, wine shops, guided tours, and river cruises. Mosques and churches were just as busy, a shining example of mutual respect among people of different faiths.
A Reminder of the Past
But the past is still there, a reminder of the city’s darkest days. The war-torn streets, once a symbol of conflict and hatred, are now a reminder of the devastating impact of war on human lives. However, just like the city’s iconic Latin Bridge, which once served as a symbol of division, hatred is a thing of the past. We can all learn from Sarajevo’s resilience and ability to overcome adversity.
Conclusion
My second visit to Sarajevo was a poignant reminder that even in the face of adversity, cities can rise again, stronger and more beautiful than ever. The city’s ability to blend its history with modernity is a testament to its people’s spirit and their determination to move forward.
