Dr. Julius Garvey, son of the renowned civil rights leader Marcus Garvey, will discuss his father’s life and legacy with Diane Richards of the Harlem Writers Guild at the New York Society Library on November 20th.
The event, “Justice for Marcus Garvey: Look for Me in the Whirlwind,” will take place at 6:00 PM Eastern at the New York Society Library, located at 53 East 79th Street in Manhattan. A live stream will also be available. Registration is required.
Dr. Garvey is a retired cardiothoracic and vascular surgeon and lecturer with over fifty years of experience in the medical field. He has served at top medical institutions and universities, including Columbia University, Albert Einstein College of Medicine, and Montefiore Medical Center, among others. Dr. Garvey has also lectured extensively on his father’s life and legacy.
Diane Richards is a novelist, singer, playwright, and theater producer, and serves as the Executive Director of the Harlem Writers Guild. Her novel Ella, about Ella Fitzgerald, was published in May 2024.
Edited by Dr. Garvey, “Justice for Marcus Garvey” is a collection of essays and personal narratives about his father’s life and work, highlighting his influence on current social justice movements. The book features contributions from thought leaders and activists, including a foreword by bestselling author Ta-Nehisi Coates.
The event will begin with a brief welcome and introduction, followed by a presentation and Q&A session. After the event, there will be an opportunity for informal book sales and signing.

Questions:
- Slides? Any other A/V?
- Particular number of seats to reserve?
- Other contributors to the book or special guests who should be recognized during the presentation?
- Generally the Library does not offer refreshments at this kind of the event, but we could put out a small amount of wine and cheese sort of thing if that’s desirable. Is it?
Additional Information:
- The Library is open Monday and Friday 9 AM-5 PM, Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday 9 AM-7 PM, and Saturday/Sunday 1 AM-5 PM. We can receive a delivery or drop off of books anytime we’re open, just brought to the main desk and indicated to “events” or “programming.”
- On the day of the event, the Library opens at 9:00 AM. The setup of the space for the event begins at about 4:00 PM, and the space should be fully set up sometime between 5:00 and 5:30 PM.
- We’ll plan to open the space for audience seating at just about 5:30 PM, and it would be great to have book sales available around that time. If a staff member from Sister’s Uptown is able to be here to sell books, they’re welcome to arrive anytime that will comfortably let them set up given that outline.
- The primary book to sell is (obviously) Justice for Marcus Garvey, but it would be a courtesy to have some copies of Diane Richards’s Ella on hand also, if that works for you.
- Our usual bookseller brings their own cash for change and iPad with Square reader, so that book sales are entirely separate from the Library’s funds. If something different is needed here, please let me know and we’ll work out an alternative.
