The singer has announced that she will be retiring from a major career residency, a huge shift for a major online company.
Gawr Gura is a VTuber, which means she is a computer-generated avatar used as a persona for another YouTuber. She debuted on the virtual YouTuber (VTuber) agency Hololive English’s channel in September 2020.
The star made her debut alongside several other VTubers including Ninomae Ina’nis, Takanashi Kiara, Watson Amelia and Mori Calliope.
Gawr Gura is the most followed VTuber in the world, with 4.56 million subscribers, and is known for wearing a shark hat. Some of her key characteristics include struggling with her spelling and with maths, as well as her quick wit. Her character is said to come from Atlantis, though she also has a knowledge of contemporary meme culture.

Gawr Gura’s graduation
Gawr Gura has announced that she will be graduating from Hololive EN on May 1, 2025. She teased the reveal on April 14, writing on X: “I have something to talk to you about tonight.”
While announcing her retirement, she said that she was “lucky” and “thankful” to have worked with Hololive for five years. She added: “It’s been an honor and a dream come true. I’ve been able to achieve what I thought for a very long time would be impossible for a girl like me, to feel a part of something and to belong.”
Hololive EN weighed in on her departure by saying that they were “endlessly grateful” for her contributions. Gawr Gura’s graduation marks a significant change for the virtual YouTuber agency, and fans are eagerly awaiting to see what’s next for the beloved VTuber.
Gawr Gura’s creator
Gawr Gura was first designed by Amelia Watson in 2020 before making her first tweet that same year. Her first online post was simply the letter “a” with a cover of Taturo Yamashita’s 1980 city pop single Ride on Time.
In June 2021, she released an original song named Reflect which racked up over a million views in less than 12 hours. She has taken several breaks over her career, citing health-related reasons and has undergone several 2D and 3D costume changes.
