Historic First for Black Africans

Angélique Kidjo to Receive Star on Hollywood Walk of Fame

Internationally acclaimed musician and humanitarian Angélique Kidjo has been selected to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, becoming the first Black African performer to earn this distinguished honor.

The five-time Grammy Award-winning artist from Benin was named among the 35 honorees in the Hollywood Walk of Fame’s Class of 2026, joining a diverse roster that includes Miley Cyrus, Timothée Chalamet, Demi Moore, and former NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal. The announcement was made during an official press conference on Wednesday, where Kidjo was celebrated as Africa’s “premier diva.”

Kidjo’s recognition marks a significant milestone in the global entertainment landscape, expanding African representation on the iconic Hollywood Boulevard. She now joins Charlize Theron, a white South African actress who received her star in 2005, as one of the few African-born artists to be so honored. The Walk of Fame currently features more than 2,700 stars.

The official date for Kidjo’s star unveiling has not yet been scheduled. According to the Walk of Fame’s tradition, recipients have up to two years to organize their induction ceremonies.

A Groundbreaking Career

Over the span of more than four decades, Kidjo has built an extraordinary career defined by her unique ability to blend the rich musical traditions of West Africa with a wide range of global genres, including funk, jazz, and R&B. Her discography includes 16 albums and a body of work that has earned her critical acclaim and a devoted international fan base.

Throughout her illustrious career, Kidjo has collaborated with some of the most respected names in music, including Burna Boy, Philip Glass, Sting, and Alicia Keys, further solidifying her global influence.

Beyond her musical achievements, Kidjo has distinguished herself as a tireless advocate for social change. She serves as a goodwill ambassador for both UNICEF and Oxfam and is the founder of the Batonga Foundation, an organization dedicated to empowering young girls in Africa through education.

A Life Shaped by Resilience and Curiosity

Born and raised in Benin, Kidjo left her homeland in 1983, seeking freedom in France amid the political oppression of Benin’s then-communist regime.

“From the moment the communist regime arrived in Benin, I became aware that the freedom we enjoy can be snatched away in a second,” Kidjo shared in an interview with the BBC in 2023.

Her unrelenting curiosity has shaped both her personal journey and her artistic vision. “My nickname was ‘when, why, how?’ I want to understand things, to understand my place in this world,” she reflected.

Kidjo began her career in France as a backing vocalist before launching her solo debut in 1990 with the album Parakou, which propelled her to international stardom.

Legacy and Impact

Angélique Kidjo’s upcoming star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame not only honors her extraordinary contributions to music and culture but also represents a groundbreaking moment for African artists on the world stage.

Her journey stands as a testament to resilience, creativity, and the boundless power of cultural exchange, and her legacy continues to inspire generations of artists across continents.

Conclusion

Angélique Kidjo’s selection for a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame is a momentous occasion, marking a significant milestone in the recognition of African talent on the global stage.
