Is NY tough on crime? Arizona doesn’t think so: Letters

The Issue: A Phoenix prosecutor’s refusal to extradite the chief suspect in a SoHo hotel homicide to New York.

I am hoping Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell prosecutes and jails alleged murderer Raad Almansoori (“Ariz. law big bucks Bragg on hotel slay,” Feb. 22).

Please don’t send him back to soft-on-crime Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg. He is a complete loser who releases undocumented migrants who have allegedly attacked NYPD officers. His record is beyond belief, and he is a large part of the crime problem in New York.

Families are leaving New York and NYPD officers are retiring in record numbers. Subways have become danger zones, as have many city streets.

Criminals are surely taking note of Bragg’s office’s many shortcomings. His policies have helped to create the unfortunate environment in which we are currently living.

God bless Mitchell for making sure that Almansoori faces justice in a Maricopa County courthouse. What chutzpah for Bragg to cite NYC’s crime statistics. First, the public would say otherwise. Also, any positive circumstances about security in this city are due to the beleaguered NYPD, not Bragg.

So Arizona has refused to extradite a suspected killer to New York because a prosecutor there doesn’t trust Bragg to properly handle the case. Maricopa’s Rachel Mitch­ell sees fit to keep Almansoori in an Arizona jail, because she says it’s safer to keep him there than return him to New York.

If we didn’t already have enough evidence that Bragg can’t be trusted to prosecute violent criminals, this debacle is just another reason that he should have been fired a long time ago. But Gov. Hochul won’t do it, because she likely fears the blowback from the liberal left.

Arizona should be applauded for its refusal to extradite the alleged murderer to New York, because Alvin Bragg consistently proves to be too lenient on criminals.

Instead of complaining about it, Bragg should simply send suspected New York criminals to Arizona, so they can be dealt with properly.

The Issue: Saint Patrick’s Cathedral hosting an unconventional funeral for celebrated sex-work activist.

If Cecilia Gentili was indeed an atheist at the time of her death, her supporters should have informed church officials when they requested a Catholic service (“St. Pat mea culpa,” Feb. 19).

There is nothing wrong with a Catholic church conducting a funeral service for a trans activist, as long as that person was a practicing Catholic. On the other hand, no one is entitled to a Catholic service simply because they are attracted to the architecture of a particular church or its historical significance.

Regardless of whether the deceased was entitled to a funeral service, it is important that members of the congregation conduct themselves in the manner that befits Saint Patrick’s Cathedral.

Honestly, I don’t care that Gentili was a trans woman or LGBTQ+ activist. As a Roman Catholic, what angers me is that mourners turned her into a martyr, calling her Saint Cecilia and “Mother of All Whores” and changed the words to liturgical songs and prayers to incorporate her name. This behavior is a mockery of the Catholic funeral mass.

These friends could have planned a more appropriate, secular funeral for their friend, an avowed atheist. This stunt was sacrilege.
