Jamaica Seeks Closer Relations with Nigeria

High Commissioner’s Goals

Jamaica’s newly appointed High Commissioner to Nigeria, His Excellency Lincoln Downer, has expressed his aim to improve and foster relations between both countries, at the government and person-to-person levels.

Jamaica is very well-known in Nigeria. They are talking about Bob Marley, Usain Bolt and Reggae music in general. So, people are knowledgeable about Jamaica no matter where you go,” he said, adding that people often respond with respect when they hear that you are from Jamaica.

Plans to Improve the Relationship

A cooperation agreement is under discussion between Jamaica and Nigeria, focusing on the areas of energy, sports, trade and investment. Mr. Downer mentioned that a trade mission with Jamaica did not come to fruition, but remains a priority for exploration and promotion.

The High Commissioner has met with representatives of the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and held discussions with tourism stakeholders in Abuja to explore ways to increase travel between the two countries.

Growing Interest in Jamaica

The Commission has received over 1,000 applications for visas to Jamaica, with Nigerians visiting Jamaica for employment, tourism, and education purposes.

Nigerian Business Interests

The Nigerian business community is focused on opportunities in tourism, food manufacturing, transportation, and oil and gas. The High Commission has been providing information to the business community and showcasing Jamaica’s interest in doing business with Nigeria.

African Market Opportunity

Mr. Downer emphasized the African market’s importance, citing Nigeria’s large economy and population of over 200 million. He noted that Jamaica’s logistic industry, tourism, and food manufacturing sectors have been promoted through the Commission.

Presentation of Credentials and Independence Anniversary

In April, High Commissioner Downer presented his credentials to Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and a church service to commemorate Jamaica’s 62nd Independence Anniversary was held in Abuja by representatives of the RCCG (Redeemed Christian Church of God) Throne Parish.
