Fashion in Nevis: A Review of the Culturama Season
Culture Meets Style
The Culturama season in Nevis is a time for celebration, cultural expression, and self-expression through fashion. This year, I was impressed with the dress code and fashion choices made by most, with only a few instances that left me saying "Huh?"
Fashion Choices
While there were some notable exceptions, I was struck by the overall stylish appearance of the people attending the events. Among the ladies, there were numerous standout fashion choices, including short, trendy cocktail-style dresses that were adorned with super-high pumps and a broad waist belt. These dresses gave the wearer a sophisticated and flirty look, suitable for both daytime and evening events.
Another popular choice among the ladies was the short jumpsuit, which is an all-in-one piece that can be dressed up or down. I saw these worn with sneakers for J’ouvert morning, sandals for daytime events, and heels for evening shows. The short jumpsuit is an excellent choice for showing off one’s legs while hiding any excess around the middle.
The super laid-back, yet elegant long Maxi-dress also made a strong appearance this season. This dress is a favorite for its ease of wear and comfort, and I saw most people opting for bright contrasting primary colors and basic jewelry with strappy sandals.
The Men’s Scene
While the ladies stole the show with their fashion choices, there were some notable exceptions among the men. The increased popularity of the slim fit, crushed denim pant was evident, with most men opting for some form of fatigue or distressed wear, giving them a well-worn, wrinkled image. However, some men did make an effort to step out of the norm and experiment with a more formal look mixed in with casual, producing a look that really caught my eye.
One standout example was a young gentleman who paired a satin or silk-like waistcoat and tie with a simple, yet classic, long sleeve buttoned shirt and a pair of jeans and Nikes. This look, combined with his twisted locks, gave him a very refined yet fun appearance that suited his profession and the fact that he was at the show to work.
Conclusion
Overall, I was impressed with the fashion choices made by Nevisians during the Culturama season. While there were some notable exceptions, the majority of people showed a willingness to experiment with new styles and push the boundaries of fashion. Congratulations to my mother for winning top designer in the Ms. Culture Queen Show!
