October Recognized as Menopause Awareness Month in The Bahamas
Nassau, The Bahamas – October is recognized as Menopause Awareness Month and a press conference was held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday, October 1, 2024, to announce activities that will be held to educate the public on menopause.
Mrs. Ann Marie Davis of the Office of the Spouse of the Prime Minister spoke at the press conference to announce plans for the month, which will provide education, resources, and support to women across The Bahamas. Members of Menopause Ambassadors were also in attendance.
Menopause is a natural transition for all females, and Mrs. Davis emphasized that it is essential for women to be aware of what happens to their bodies and the challenges that come with it. Dr. Pamela Carroll, an Obstetrician and Gynecologist at the Womencare Center, explained that menopause is defined by 12 consecutive months without a period, and is not defined by symptoms. She also discussed the symptoms of menopause, including hot flashes, night sweats, dryness of the vagina, hair loss, skin changes, irritability, mood swings, depression, and anxiety.
Retired Nurse and Health and Wellness Coach, Doretha Miller, offered advice on how women going through menopause can alleviate symptoms by eating nutritious meals, exercising, and drinking plenty of water. Menopause Health Practitioner, Patrice Lockhart, announced that the country will be celebrating World Menopause Awareness Day and National T-shirt day on Friday, October 18, 2024, and explained that other activities planned for the month include special presentations on menopause in North Eleuthera and Harbour Island, workshops in New Providence and Grand Bahama, and the launch of the first-ever ‘Involve the Menopause Chapter’ magazine.
