Land Purchase for Cemetery Expansion in Nevis
Premier’s Press Conference Clarifies Transaction
On February 25, Premier of Nevis, the Honourable Mark Brantley, Minister of Finance in the NIA, held a press conference to address the land purchase at Bath Plain. He provided clarity on the transaction and emphasized its importance for the island’s cemetery infrastructure.
Land Purchase Details
According to Premier Brantley, the Administration purchased 12.7088 acres of land from Ursula Huggins-Whitney for US $1 million in 2020. The land covers an area from the Bath Cemetery, up the hill, and into Bath Plain itself, including an old, abandoned property on the premises. The main purpose of the purchase was to secure space for the expansion of the Bath Cemetery.
Why the Land Purchase was Necessary
As one of the main cemeteries on the island, Bath Cemetery was facing a shortage of space. Therefore, the Administration approached landowners adjoining the cemetery, but Mrs. Whitney was not willing to sell a portion of her land. As a result, the Administration had to purchase the entire property to ensure the cemetery’s expansion.
Future Plans for the Property
Regarding future plans for the property, Premier Brantley explained that the Administration will determine what to do with the lands on top of the hill, but those that cascade down the hill will be graded and prepared for the expansion of the cemetery.
Conclusion
Premier Brantley emphasized the importance of providing accurate information to the public, as there has been misinformation circulating about the land purchase. He took the opportunity to address the issue and provide clarity, ensuring that the public is aware of the true facts surrounding the transaction.
