Paul Mescal fans are shook over his American accent in ‘Foe’
Talk about a culture shock!
Fans of Paul Mescal are going wild after a clip of the Irish heartthrob speaking in an American accent went viral via TikTok on Saturday.
The clip, which has been viewed nearly 5 million times, was uploaded to Amazon’s Prime Video account in an effort to promote their film “Foe,” which stars Mescal, 27, and Saoirse Ronan, 29.
“Do me a favor,” Mescal says in the clip. “Stop wearing that shirt.”
“Why?” questions Ronan. “I like this shirt.”
“You were wearing it the day we met,” adds the “Gladiator” star. “The more you wear it, the more worn out it’ll get.”
The two then stare at each other during a protracted silence with a small smile appearing at the edge of Mescal’s mouth.
“So what else do you remember about that day?” Ronan asks, breaking the silence.
“We were happy,” states Mescal as the clip ends.
The 33-second video left several viewers aghast.
“PAUL MESCAL WITH AN AMERICAN ACCENT? WITH SAIROSE RONAN,” one fan screeched in the video’s comment section.
“The American accent is making my brain do backflips,” said a second fan.
“He sounds like a completely different person in an American accent,” a third fan gushed.
Some fans, however, were convinced the “Aftersun” actor was dubbed.
“You cannot convince me that’s Paul Mescal’s voice it literally looks like a voiceover,” one person stated.
“Idk who that voice belongs to but it isn’t Paul Mescal,” a second user said.
The Amazon film tells the story of Hen (Ronan) and her husband, Junior (Mescal), as they navigate life after a stranger appears and informs the couple that Junior must go to a mysterious space station and will be replaced by a biomechanical replica of himself.
Based on a 2018 novel of the same name, “Foe” opened in early October to generally negative reviews.
Despite the negative press the psychological thriller received, the “Normal People” actor is set to bounce back in the second installment of the “Gladiator” franchise.
“I’m so proud I get to make it,” Mescal told The Hollywood Reporter in February 2023. “It’s an intimidating feat. It’s something I’m nervous about, but something I feel like I can do.”
“Of course, there’s a physical robustness required for the character,” continued Mescal. “This guy’s got to fight and got to be a beast. And whatever that looks and feels like is right for me, is what it’s going to be.”
Not much is known about the upcoming film except for the fact that Mescal is set to play Lucius, the nephew of Commodus from the original film.
The “All of Us Strangers” actor is slated to appear alongside Denzel Washington, Joseph Quinn, Fred Hechinger and Pedro Pascal, with original “Gladiator” alum Connie Nielsen and Derek Jacobi reprising their roles as Lucilla and Senator Gracchus, respectively.
“Gladiator 2” is slated to hit theaters in November 2024.
