After five long years, the McLean’s Town Primary School in Grand Bahama, The Bahamas, has reopened its doors to students, marking a new beginning for the community.
A School Reborn
Decimated by Hurricane Dorian in September 2019, the school has undergone a remarkable transformation. The campus and school building now boasts a fresh, new look, complete with metal roofing, hurricane impact windows, and a reinforced seawall.
An added feature is the location of the Met Office’s weather station on the school’s grounds, providing students with a unique opportunity to learn about weather patterns and meteorology.
A Community United
For five years, students from East End had to travel to Freeport to attend classes, waking up earlier than usual and returning home later than usual. McLean’s Town is Grand Bahama’s farthest settlement to the east accessible by road.
With Monday, September 2nd, 2024 marking the first day students returned to a classroom in their community, Education officials celebrated the school’s reopening and acceptance of students from neighboring areas.
Government Officials Visit
Foreign Affairs Minister Fred Mitchell, Senator James Turner Rolle, and area Administrator Shanice Thompson were among the government officials who visited with the students and faculty to celebrate the school’s highly anticipated opening.
Conclusion
The reopening of McLean’s Town Primary School is a testament to the resilience and determination of the Bahamian people. As the school looks to the future, it will continue to provide a quality education to its students, fostering a sense of community and pride in the face of adversity.
