Ryan Reynolds borrows Hugh Jackman’s broken Emmy Award during acceptance speech

Ryan Reynolds had viewers in stitches during his Creative Arts Emmy Awards acceptance speech on Sunday after the actor used Hugh Jackman’s broken award to thank the Television Academy’s committee.

The snarky speech comes after “Welcome to Wrexham,” a documentary series about the Welsh football club co-owned by Reynolds and “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” star Rob McElhenney, managed to snag five awards.

“Wow, an Emmy, what an incredible honor,” McElhenney, 46, said in a video that was posted by the duo on X (formerly Twitter). “There’s so many people to thank. I’ve been waiting for this moment for 16 years. So I’ve got a lot to say. I’d like to start by thanking —”

Before the actor can finish, he is cut off by Reynolds, 47, who is dressed in a tux and wearing a Deadpool mask.

“Wow! Um, Mr. Lively couldn’t be here to accept this broken Emmy so he sent me on his behalf,” he says. “First and foremost, Wrexham, we love you.”

“Thank you for letting Rob and the other guy tell your story,” he continues. “Cymru am byth, b—tes” which translates to “Wales forever.”

“I’d also like to thank the Academy for this honor and for not asking us to attend the televised awards show with the real celebrities,” the “Free Guy” star states. “I’d also like to thank FX and Disney for their support and in exchange Mr. Lively promises to not f–k up my next movie.”

Wrapping up his speech, Reynolds calls out the upcoming Academy Awards.

“Lastly, the Oscars. You’re on notice motherf–ers,” says Reynolds. “Maybe we can get a token VFX nod next year. The amount of work on Hugh and Ryan’s face alone is at least worth a nod.”   

Following the speech, the “Proposal” actor took to Instagram to explain that Jackman, who won the award for hosting the 58th Tony Awards in 2005, had already broken the award prior to the taping.

“In order to accept the Emmy for ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ I needed to borrow someone else’s,” explained the actor. “Of course, I called [Hugh]. Unsurprisingly, he wasn’t sure if he had an Emmy. Turns out he does. He gives it to me, then asks, ‘Is it supposed to look like that?’”

 “It isn’t. It’s broken,” Reynolds concludes, adding, “I love this man.”

“Welcome to Wrexham” — which won awards for editing, directing, cinematography, sound and Unstructured Reality Program — is available to stream on Hulu and Disney Plus.

Reynolds and Jackman, 55, are slated to star together in the upcoming film, “Deadpool 3.”
