UTech, Ja Students Receive First Fully Funded Scholarships from Chancellor’s Foundation
Scholarship Students Overwhelmed with Gratitude
Three students at UTech, Jamaica’s Caribbean School of Nursing (CSON) have received fully funded scholarships towards their educational pursuits from UTech, Jamaica’s Chancellor, Lloyd Carney through his Carney Global Ventures Foundation. The students, who are all enrolled in the BSc in Nursing course of study at the Papine Campus, were presented with their awards by Carney during a brief ceremony inside the President’s Conference Room.
About the Scholarships
The scholarships, which took care of everything, including food, books, tuitions, and uniforms for the three students, mark the first time UTech, Ja students have benefited from this type of aid from the Carney Global Ventures Foundation. Chancellor Lloyd Carney stated that providing comprehensive scholarships was a deliberate move to eliminate financial struggles for these students.
“I want this to be a holistic scholarship,” Carney said. “I’ve observed that my Foundation has been providing scholarships for over thirty years to other institutions locally, but somehow there is still hardship that is not resolved. I noted that in some instances students, after receiving scholarships, can’t find uniforms, they can’t find money for housing, they can’t find money for food. So, providing scholarships that would cover everything is a deliberate move to eliminate such challenges for these students.”
The students, who were overcome with emotions, praised the Chancellor for his timely intervention. Sudeek Sloley, one of the scholarship recipients, revealed that she was worried about completing her degree due to financial constraints, but the Chancellor’s announcement about the extensive award brought her relief. “I was questioning what was going to happen, but now having all these and other expenses covered, I describe the Chancellor’s intervention as an answered prayer,” she said.
Katanya Allen, another scholarship recipient, stated that she was grateful for the opportunity, noting that she aims to bring hope to trauma patients through her service in the nursing profession in the future. Cameal Walker, the third scholarship recipient, expressed relief that she would not need to take a leave of absence due to financial issues.
Dean’s Congratulations and Advice
Dean, College of Health Sciences, Dr. Campbell, congratulated the scholarship recipients and urged them to continue to strive for excellence to maintain their awards and become positive contributors to the nursing profession. She also thanked the Chancellor for investing in the students’ education and the college.
Foundation’s Future Plans
This is the first scholarship of its kind to UTech, Ja students under the Carney Global Ventures Foundation. Chancellor Lloyd Carney stated that the plan is to continue the initiative at the university in the coming years and intends to invite other sponsors to join in providing similar support. He emphasized that the outcome of renowned reputable nursing graduates from the University of Technology, Jamaica is well-sought after.
