Objective and Membership
A new group called ‘Women of Western Jamaica (WOWJa)’ has been created to bring successful women together to build power, success, and transformation in western Jamaica.
This group includes women leaders, business owners, educators, and influencers from both the public and private sectors. They aim to work together, mentor others, and grow the economy.
Launch and Unity
Janet Silvera, the founder and Chair of WOWJa, called for unity and action during the group’s launch at the Montego Bay Convention Centre on Thursday, April 24. She said the members have promised to support and promote the voices, successes, and leadership of women across western Jamaica.
“The women of WOWJa are not only movers and shakers but also women who lift others up as they climb,” Ms. Silvera said. “When one wins, we all win.”
Planning and Vision
Ms. Silvera explained that creating WOWJa took 15 years of planning. She wanted women in western Jamaica to work together, refer clients to one another, and create paths for shared success.
She added, “The real power is in what we accomplish together. WOWJa is not just a name—it’s a bold statement that we are ready to make big changes in the best way.”
Support and Encouragement
Minister of Legal and Constitutional Affairs, Hon. Marlene Malahoo Forte, welcomed the launch and offered her support. She encouraged the members to be kind to themselves as they lift others and drive positive change.
She said, “Women have a very special role to play in a way that has not been done before. I am counting on you. Real power is in what we do together.”
Empowerment and Leadership
Guest speaker Chorvelle Johnson Cunningham, CEO of Sagicor Bank, challenged the women to empower each other, learn from each other, and offer support. She reminded them that they have a duty to lead, mentor new leaders, and spark positive changes for women.
She said, “The change must come, and the change starts today.”
Conclusion
In spite of the rhetoric of change it does not appear that WOWJa intends to act as a de facto political party.
