Popop International Center for the Visual Arts, a Nassau-based gallery and artist cooperative, has announced its selection to exhibit at the international art fair Volta NY for the fourth consecutive year.
About Volta NY
The selected galleries hail from 50 cities around the world, featuring artists of 43 nationalities. With its boutique event format, established in 2008, Volta NY showcases contemporary art from emerging international artists. A record-breaking 45,000 visitors attended last year’s event, with similar numbers expected for 2016.
Co-founded in Basel, Switzerland, and now led by Amanda Coulson, Director of the National Art Gallery of the Bahamas and Artistic Director of Volta NY, the fair has become a premier event in the art world.
This year, the spotlight shines on local painter and sculptor Tessa Whitehead, whose solo show at Volta NY will be the first for a Bahamian female artist.
About Tessa Whitehead
Trained in painting, Whitehead has expanded her medium to include sculptures and installations using raw materials such as cement, wood, and stainless steel.
She will showcase a 15-foot sculpture, “Rainbow of Stars,” incorporating 354 individually-cut wooden stars strung up like a necklace and formed into a rainbow shape. In addition, viewers can expect a series of her paintings based on sketches from her sketchbook.
Whitehead’s Inspiration
“I like to work in a way that the outcome is uncertain, and so I’m really looking forward to seeing this new body of work in such a formal space,” Whitehead explained. “The sculpture and paintings describe drawings from my sketchbook. By recording curious or fleeting moments and reworking them slowly, I can examine the idea of objectifying suspended time.”
Popopstudios’ Participation and Perspective
As part of the fair, Popopstudios will be a conduit for showcasing the Caribbean’s rich artistic talent. “Popopstudios was the first gallery from the region to participate in Volta NY,” said CEO John Cox. “We’re honored to exhibit again, sharing the world with amazining contemporary art from The Bahamas. Volta NY gives us a global platform to demonstrate a vibrant visual culture with artists capable of standing on the world stage.”
The Fair
The Fair will take place at PIER 90 in Hell’s Kitchen, New York City from March 2 – 6.
