A Rude Awakening in Sweden

A few years ago, I was having dinner at a restaurant in New York City when I got into a conversation with an American couple at the table next to me. When I told them that I was a travel reporter, they said that they’d just returned from a trip to Scandinavia.
“How did you like it?” I asked.
“It was beautiful”, they replied. “Except for Sweden.”
“Sweden?” I asked, surprised. “What do you mean?”
“The people were so rude,” the husband said, shaking his head. “We will never, ever go back there.”
“I don’t understand,” I said. “That’s not how Swedes are. I know, I spent some time in that country. What happened?”
“Well, they obviously don’t like foreigners”, said the wife. “When we checked into our hotel, the concierge called us morons. Later, when we went out for lunch, the manager called us the same thing. We just turned around and left.”
“Wait a moment,” I said. “That doesn’t mean what you think. The word moron is Swedish for Good Morning.”
The couple turned away and never said another word.
Unpacking the Misunderstanding
The couple’s reaction was a perfect example of the misunderstandings that can arise when cultural differences are not understood. In Sweden, the word “moron” is a common way to greet someone, similar to “hello” or “good morning” in other cultures. However, in the couple’s home country, the word “moron” is considered offensive and has negative connotations.
This incident highlights the importance of cultural awareness and understanding when traveling to foreign countries. As travelers, it is essential to be open-minded and willing to learn about the local customs and ways of life.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the story of the couple who had a negative experience in Sweden due to a misunderstanding highlights the importance of cultural awareness and understanding when traveling. By being open-minded and willing to learn about the local customs and ways of life, travelers can avoid similar misunderstandings and have a more enjoyable and enriching experience.
