Jamaican Polo Player Makes History with Historic U.S. Open Victory
A 15-Year Journey Culminates in Victory and Hope for a Bright Future
Jamaican polo player Jason Waite’s 15-year journey has culminated in a historic victory, not only for himself but for the sport nationally. His win raises hopes for a bright future in polo competition.
Hats Off to a Historic U.S. Open Victory
Waite became the first Jamaican to win the United States Open Polo title on Monday, the most sought-after prize in American Polo. His team, Park Place, defeated Valiente 12-11, claiming their first-ever title.
The eventful final match spanned two days, with rain stalling play on Sunday. Notably, the title served as an early birthday gift for Waite and validation for his decision to leave Jamaica more than a decade ago to pursue his dream.
A Dream Realized
In his own words, Waite’s accomplishment is a dream come true.
“I’m honourable to be able to represent Jamaica,” said Waite. “I’ve been working at the sport and making a name for myself for a long time. So to have the opportunity to be selected on a team playing at the highest level and winning the open is a dream come true.’
A Year in the Making
Waite’s achievement is even sweeter given that it is his first season with the team. The adjustment has moulded him into a better player and affords him the privilege of being part of historical moments.
‘They have been working toward this goal for a few years and being chosen to compete for them was amazing on its own,” Waite said. ‘Fitting in and ultimately getting it done on the biggest stage validates all my work from the beginning and all of their work. so much has gone into this season from all of us. Winning against the best on the highest stage is the ultimate validation.’
A Strong Support Team
A lively Jamaican contingent was on site to cheer Waite to the triumph. Having moved to the United States initially to pursue his dream, Waite hopes that his achievement might stir similar success for other Jamaican prospects.
‘The energy and passion resonated with everyone on the sidelines and it felt like they turned the whole crowd in our favour,’, Waite said. ‘hopefully it can help to bring new young people into the game and motivate the ones already playing to stick with it.’
Addition to this, Waite explained that the sport is incredibly demanding:
‘Jamaicans are loud and proud. The energy and passion resonated with everyone on the sidelines. As for the sport itself, we know it’s immensely challenging,'” Waite said. ‘When you learn the game and how to ride well there is nothing like it. If you stick with it and build your relationships in the sport, you can lead to great things. Polo has opened the world up to me, and I’d like to believe it can do something similar for young people in a unique kind of way.’
In its 15-year journey, Jamaican polo player Jason Waite has made history with a stunning defeat of Valiente in the U.S Open Polo title. His triumphant win not only sets off a bright future but underscores the immense potential for young athletes keen to pursue their dreams. The ultimate validation of his dedication has certainly inspired many and serves as testimony to the transformative power of Polo。
