Culturama Fashion: A Review
Fashion Impressions
I must say that over the Culturama season, I was indeed very impressed with the dress code and fashion choices made by most. Although there were the odd incidents that made me say, "Huh?", generally I was left thinking that collectively, Nevisians truly have a top-rated fashion sense.
However, this statement is admittedly rather one-sided, in that although I made a broad reference to the styles worn, the images in my head are mostly of the ladies. There is no denying that there were the special males here and there that made the extra effort to wear something just a little more special than the standard issue t-shirt and jeans, but such occurrences were few and far between.
Among the males, the only real change I saw was the increased popularity of the slim fit, crushed denim pant. Most had some form of fatigue or distressed wear, giving them a well-worn, wrinkled image, which personally isn’t my favourite look on a guy but seems to be currently in vogue.
Ladies’ Fashion
However, what I did see in abundance was the short, trendy cocktail style dress. These made an appearance at most of the shows in the evening this year. Adorned with super-high pumps and a broad waist belt, these little numbers gave the wearer a sophisticated flirty look, which was absolutely suitable for sitting down at the shows or staying out to dance and socialize afterwards.
Now I usually don’t like something that everyone and their sister is wearing, but due to the cosmically vast varieties of print, colour, and styling of these dresses, it was very difficult to see two or more ladies in the same outfit. Ranging from floral to solid colours, ruffles, pleating, draping, and other construction techniques, each dress I saw looked unique and individual. On top of which, each was accessorized differently by utilizing contrasting coloured jewelry and makeup, all in all creating an extraordinarily chic look.
Another emerging favourite with the ladies was the short jumpsuit. This all-in-one piece, in my opinion, is the height of easy-to-wear, laid-back chic. I saw this choice worn on the road for J’ouvert morning with cute sneakers, for daytime casual events with attractive sandals, and even at some of the evening shows with super-sexy heels. This piece is, and was, easily dressed up or down. They ranged from super-tailored in fit, to loose and draping. Although the longer version of this item is also a hot item currently, they were not as in favour as their shorter cousin. A way to show off your legs, yet still hide any excess around the middle, the short jumpsuit was an excellent choice.
Going strong again since last year was the super laid-back, yet simply elegant long Maxi-dress. This dress is a favourite for its ease of wear and comfort. This year I thought most tended to be in bright contrasting primary colours, and usually worn with basic jewelry and strappy sandals.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the fashion choices made by Nevisians during the Culturama season were impressive, with the ladies showcasing a wide range of styles and trends. Although there were some notable exceptions among the males, the overall fashion sense was top-rated. I must, however, compliment us all on a whole for keeping up a generally fashion-forward and stylish appearance this Culturama season.
